UN Women and UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs:
“The report covers all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, highlights new data and evidence on gender equality trends and gaps, and finds that the world is still falling short of its commitments to women and girls.
There are some bright spots, including declining poverty rates, narrowing gender gaps in education, and a push for positive legal reforms.
However, with just six years to go before the 2030 deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals, not a single indicator under Goal 5, gender equality, has been fully achieved.
Eliminating extreme poverty among women could take another 137 years at the current rate of change, and no country has all the relevant laws in place to prohibit discrimination, prevent gender-based violence, support equal rights in marriage and divorce, ensure equal pay, and provide full access to sexual and reproductive health.
Gender parity in parliaments may not be achieved before 2063.
The report underlines the enormous cost involved. On the underinvestment in women’s rights and draws attention to proven solutions that benefit women, girls and entire communities, the report advocates for radical action to change the current trajectory and dramatically accelerate progress on gender equality and women’s rights.
