During the years 2000-2013, Yemen witnessed remarkable progress in bridging gender gaps. Women’s education rates and life expectancy at birth more than doubled, and women’s representation reached 28.3% of the workforce in the private sector and non-governmental organizations, and 9.3% of workers in the government and public sectors.
The progress achieved by women and girls has regressed since the outbreak of armed conflict in 2014. The armed conflict has impacted women at various levels, and their participation in peace processes and decision-making is also very weak. There has been a near-total absence of Yemeni women involved in peace efforts at the national level since 2015.
There are no national strategic plans for implementing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action at the time of writing. Yemen’s Strategic Vision 2025 did not clearly address any efforts to advance women’s rights, except for a small portion of it, focusing on improving women’s conditions in the areas of education, health, and culture. To indicate in just one paragraph the intention to provide more opportunities for women to participate in political and social activities and to increase the percentage of women’s participation in the workforce
